Project description

Venous thromboembolism (VTE), comprised of deep vein thrombosis (DVT) and/or pulmonary embolism (PE), affects 350,000±600,000 individuals in the United States annually. More than 100,000 people die each year in the United States as a result of PE±more than from breast cancer, AIDS, and motor vehicle collisions combined.[1] This is preventable through the administration of the drug heparin to patients while in the hospital. In a double blind research project at the Johns Hopkins Hospital, a vignette based eLeaning lesson was created to study its effect on nurses performance with regard to the administration of heparin as opposed to traditional training methods, that as purely informational and do not employee vignettes, scenarios, or interactive eLearning techniques. The results of this project were published August 15, 2017 by PLOS (The Public Library of Science).
